Briards
Briards are large and long-haired dogs. They are powerful, agile, intelligent, gentle, and easy to train. Briard dogs have many unique characteristics: coat, head and ears, tail, and body proportions. This breed is rare nowadays, but it’s very ancient. Originated from the oldest domesticated dogs, Briards have been accompanying people for many centuries. These dogs have always been praised for their guarding and herding abilities. The early history of the breed is unknown; the first picture of the Briard dates back to the 8th century. Large and hairy dogs are depicted in stone chiseling found in France. They are mentioned in folk songs and ballads.
Briards are very versatile and intelligent. They can be taught to perform a variety of tasks. During the First World War, these dogs were used to carry messages, patrol at listening posts, and search for wounded soldiers. Many Briards died during the war. The breed was preserved by the efforts of the devoted fanciers.
The AKC recognized Briards in 1928. The breed standard has not changed much since that time. Up to nowadays, this breed is considered to be rare. Only devoted breeders produce Briard puppies for sale. In 1991, for instance, there were only 50 new litters of these dogs. Nowadays, the Briard ranks 109th among 135 AKC breeds. Lack of popularity is in a way useful for preserving the original working abilities and personality of the breed, because impulsive and unknowledgeable buyers will not buy a dog of a rare breed and backyard breeders will not produce mediocre dogs for sale.
The main beauty of the Briard dog is its long and dense coat. It’s coarse and dry, making rasping sounds when rubbed. Lack of oil makes the coat easy to brush. Though long-coated, this breed is a medium shedder, if it’s groomed regularly. Briard dogs are easy to keep and train. They are hardy, healthy, and fit to any climate. Briard dogs can be kept both indoors and outdoors. They enjoy being around people. The life expectancy of this breed is 13-14 years. The most serious health disorders in Briards are bloat and hip and elbow dysplasia.
