Briards rescue organizations may involve a group of individual volunteers. Rescuers should provide foster homes for Briards that need new homes. Normally, they provide necessary veterinary care, vaccinations, heartworm testing, spaying and neutering. As rescues have limited rescue resources, donations are always welcomed. Besides money, you can donate dog food, toys and any equipment that is suitable for a dog.
Most rescue dogs are available at six months or older. Chances are slim that you will find a puppy in a shelter. This is considered an advantage, as there is no need to worry about housebreaking and teaching a puppy some basics of doggy behavior in the house. Other than that, there are more hardships you will face and will have to overcome with a rescue Briard. Rescue dogs are hurt, because their former owners have abandoned them.
The reasons Briards end up in rescues can be the following: the family could not find time for the dog any more, and their expectations turned out different from what they got with a Briard. It could happen that the family did not take the time to train the dog and over a period of time it became difficult to handle the dog. Also, the Briard's owners' living conditions could have changed.

Briards - Breed History
Known as the Chien Berger de Brie in France, his native land, Briard, the breed evolved by natural selection for its herding and guarding abilities. Although most of the early history is unwritten, tapestries show the Emperor Charlemagne with Briards more than 1200 years ago. Stone chiselings depicted the shaggy dogs and folk songs praised them. Thomas Jefferson, a former ambassador to France, is believed to be the first to bring Briards to the US; he used them to tend his flocks of Merino sheep at Monticello.
